With things starting to return to normal, I have to consider my relationship as the skipper of Mumbles Belle. In the past I have gone out whenever the weather allowed, mainly to keep the "Barmy Army" happy, but the reluctance of most of them to step up to share the running of the boat since the marina re-opened, has given me second thoughts. From now on I will only take the boat out when the tide is right for fishing Mumbles, or when its suitable to fish Langland, the days of running around trying to find fish are over. You get out only what you put in

Dean Gifford I wondered why your car was still there last night when we got back in. We had an enjoyable evening, loads of corkwing wrasse, 8-10 pollack, millions of small bream, tompot blenny, half a dozen conger and just 2 doggies. Was blowing a fair bit when we were on our way back in at 9:30. Paul Eaton The joys of being a skipper !! Victor Lilygreen Its days like that, that give me second thoughts! Wendy Lilygreen I've not heard of lunatic fish, or thornback fish before. Victor Lilygreen Lunatic Fish are smooth hounds (like a small shark) that go berserk when you have one on the line, sometimes even jumping out of the water. Thornbacks are a species of ray & resemble a dustbin lid wrapped up in barbed wire, & covered in slime yuk lol Paul Eaton A bin lid covered in barb wire.. that is the best description of a Ray I’ve ever heard !!

Not much of a day! We didn't have much of a day weather wise or fishing wise on Thursday, we had quite a few spells of "rock & rolling" when the wind changed direction & gusted, but nothing too bad. We probably wouldn't have noticed if the fishing had been good, but personally I had only dogfish & lunatic fish. Peter fared better having both dogs & lunatics, plus a good size thornback, plus 3 or 4 nice dabs & a nice plaice (plus he missed a big plaice because he never used the net, & we watched it swim away) Well he has been told, & I put the net next to him, lesson learned I hope. We had some rollers coming home but they were behind & helped us along, unfortunately my battery in the car was flat? Luckily Allan Walters came in at the same time & gave me a lift home & took me down with a charged battery this morning. The inconvenience of only 2 on board is not the only inconvenience we have to suffer! Skipper Vic

"Lunatic Fish" probably about 8, growlers untold numbers, Good Dabs 1 Plaice 5 (2 barely size returned) 1 bream (barely size returned) apart from that it was beautiful weather, its just that every time Peter put his leggings on the rain stopped. I took brown bread & salted butter to make mackerel fillet sandwches, unfortunately Allan & Richie FAILED MISERABLY TO GET ANY MACKEREL. once again it was up to Mein Host to catch all the good fish, these boys must master the way to make the traces & the colour & sequence of beads is an art form they have to learn lol lol lol Skipper Vic. Best plaice

Looking forward to the next few days! Tomorrow just 2 of us out on Mumbles Belle, a big old boat for just 2 of us, but thats what Drakesford decrees. We will be targeting plaice & dabs, I have fresh ragworm & frozen black lug from last year lol. No reason why the boat shouldn't go well all has been checked over, & with just 2 of us & 24ft of deckspace we will have plenty of social space. I hope we get plenty of social dabs as my freezer is totally "dab free" after the lockdown. Then on Thursday I shall be sorting out the delivery of my "new" vehicle (I say new but its not new lol), its a Daihatsu Fourtrack just the job for those snowy frosty winter mornings when ordinary cars are skidding on their way to the marina. So its exciting times for the next few days, hopefully on the 18th Drakeford will give us some better news so we can start to get back to normal, I am getting too old to wait much longer!

Just rung the marina to arrange a lock out & lock in next Wednesday, & I was told that I cant make a booking before 1700 tomorrow night? Have we got a statue of the marina manager we can tear down? I will give George the good news. When the lock manager finds out who it is, there will probably be a total lock in lol

It depends on the weather & what pearls of wisdom Mr Drakeford comes out with this week, but I fancy taking Belle out for a spin on Wednesday. HW is about 1030 so an 0800 start would be reasonable, a drift for plaice followed by a hook down for dabs would be a pleasant change from sitting in the marina.

Still tarting Belle up (or is that not "politically correct" nowadays?) I replaced the one duff bulb in the nav light, & cleaned the connection in the non working anchor light. I investigated the horn, after the spades (is that still correct) were cleaned, I connected the both together & the horn worked. So I checked the cable from the horn button to the horn & NOTHIING, So the problem has to be between the horn button & the horn itself. I am on a roll now, so I remove the cable between both, I solder the ends at the horrn button end, but by now it is raining quite hard & the boat is facing the wrong way, & my back is now soaking wet! By now I have worked out that there is a break in the cable between horn & button (for me that is advanced), now all I want is some dry weather & I will fit bayonets on the horn, connect it up, & hopefully I wont have to shout at the "Barmy Army" to drop the anchor anymore, progress!

Trips on Mumbles Belle are not sensible at the moment, Mr Drakeford has stipulated that you can only have 2 people together unless they are from the same household. 2 people would be impractical & expensive, & so I am waiting for the "smoke to clear" on this 2 people thing before we start up again. Now if he announces any difference I will let you know. MEANWHILE if he announces that we CAN HAVE MORE as long as you keep social distancing, there is plenty of white glossing to be done, & the seat duckboards need a coat of varnish. Skipper Vic

Anybody got a horn they don't want? (No filthy responses please lol) I was checking the electrics on Belle this morning & the electric connections on the horn were a pile of rust, that snapped off when I tried to undo them. One of the navigation light bulbs is blown & so has the bulb for the anchor light. this lockdown has been a nightmare. The battery terminals had mushrooms growing on them, & when I opened the engine compartment to dip the oil it smelled like a sewer. I will be glad when Mr Drakeford gets fed up of his allotment & we get back to normal! Skipper Vic

What next? I took the angle grinder to the fibre glass concealing half of the inspection cover of the fuel tank (why did they do that?) removed the inspection cover & took out the offending plastic tube, & checked there was nothing else in the tank, & buttoned everything back up. I could have done without that problem really it was a lot of work through my own stupidity, but I will put Jubilee clips on in future. I now know how the fuel system works, & what goes where, & I did manage to find things I thought I had lost, & I binned some of the stuff I didn't want, In don't know where all those reels came from lol. The observation plate is now readily accessible should it ever be needed & an easier system of fueling up has been discovered. As you can see it wasn't exactly a little piece of plastic pipe I dropped in there was it.

Darren James Nash Oops sounds like what I would do 10 min job and 2 hours later lol
Victor Lilygreen I never checked that the plastic pipe was tight on the tundish (it was tight before lockdown) Before the stroke I would have checked that I am sure?
Victor Lilygreen I don't know where it came from I have several lumps on board its just a lump that happened to be the right length & diameter. Message to self "get a length that fits both the fuel pump & the tank & clamp with Jubilee clips" lol

NOT PAYING ATTENTION! Which is getting quite common for me nowadays. I wanted to put 20ltrs of fuel in the tank & so I did the usual, plastic pipe into the fuel tank, filtered tundish into the palstic pipe, & poured the diesel into the tundish. (I spilled some as usual) but at the end when I took the tundish out, the plastic pipe dropped into the tank! Despite my best efforts to retrieve it I failed! I now have to drill a series of holes in the fireglass skin & saw between the holes until I can remove that piece of skin, undo the observation plate, remove the plastic pipe, put the cover back on, make a cover for the hole I cut, & put all the junk back in the cabin (I wondered where all that junk had gone? Even if we didn't have "social distancing" like MOST jobs on Belle its a one man touch! There are times I wish I would go down there & see only the roof!

Commodore
I don't plan any trips for the next couple of weeks (until the novelty of "serviced equipment etc" & accurately timed lock in & outs have lost their novelty. I find it difficult to judge lock in times. With tide & wind behind us we can do Mumbles to West Pier in 40 mins, with wind & tide against it is an hour, so I would be spending all my time estimating lock in times, & with everything going faster than us, & no apparent order for the lock in it will be a nightmare until the novelty wears off. In order to maintain "Social Distancing" I would have thought that 4 would be a sensible number, with 2 in the bow & 2 in the stern there is room for it. I wont be attempting any trips until this "slot booking" has ended, we need the best of weather & tend to go at short notice, we could be taking up slots that others would take if we were to put our name down 5-7 days before only to cancel at the last minute. There seems to be no way we can operate in an environment of strict timetables we need flexibility & to come & go as we feel (much like Dominic Cummings) lol If you want any further details then let me know
