The boat is generally in good condition, all fenders and ropes were doing their work. Shore power hadn't tripped this time so the domestic voltage had remained at 13.6v. Fuel is approximately 1/2 in both tanks, so will need to be refueled before the next trip.Engines Checks Port Expansion tank was empty so needed to top up the water Gearbox and Main oil levels fine Starboard Water and oil levels fine. 1ltr of water in starboard bilge. Stern gland not dripping but greased both sides anyway. There are 2 holes on the top of the starboard engine cover that needs filling, there used to be something else there but the screw holes are just empty - this could be an additional source of water ingress.

I am sure all of you have seen the public notice that the marina is opening as normal on Monday, & that Tawe Lock will be operating at reduced capacity from Wednesday. Don't worry I have weighed up the "pros & cons" of a quick start, however with the draconian measures of locking in & out at strict times I will give it a miss for a week or two until the "novelty" wears off & coming & going is more flexible, For example how can I put our boat down for a lock out time not knowing exactly what the weather is going to be like on Wednesday? Locking in has always been a shambles, when you are holding in the river & boats come up past you & hold close to the lock & get allowed in despite "jumping the queue" I will wait until the status quo comes back. Sorry "Barmy Army" but we will wait for the madding crowd to clear the air before we go.

Swansea Marina is to open on Monday, 1 June 2020 The entry key fob will be reactivated on Monday and the locks will open from Wednesday. Cpnditions will apply, such as fewer boats (4) in each lock operation. Social distancing and hygine rules will still apply. Similar conditions will have to be used on the boats, fewr anglers per fishing trip and 2m distancing fishing positions on the boats, along with good safety and hygine procedures.

Close to being ready. I put a tarp over the davit space & anchor locker so hopefully that will solve the problem of water in the bow. I started to creosote the duckboards & thought " a little bit more" until I finished them, now I need to turn them over & do the underneath lol. Dipped the fuel & if its right we still have 68 litres but I am not sure, so I brought the jerrycan home with me "just in case". I started the engine & ran it for a while to top up the batteries, although the solar panel seems to be working fine in this sunny weather. Just waiting for permission so we can get out & chase some fish!

Much appreciated what the committee and skippers are doing behind the scenes in these difficult times to get us back fishing again. Safely and as soon as possible. Nigel Davies
Very much appreciated lads. Thanks from the boys in Bryn. Albert Harris
Much appreciate the work done by the skippers. Thanks from Chris in Cardiff who occasionally gets out his reels and tried to remember what to do with them. Chris Bird
Lets hope they open the locks soon, looking forward to the tope. Mike Davis

Well done Dean, does the starboard gland seal need a tweak. Richie Pearce
Probably, not sure if was all from the gland seal. I'll be checking both on Wednesday to try and figure out exactly where the water is coming in. Dean
OK, great if you need anything let me know. Richie

Oystercat visit 18 May 2020 by Dean Gifford
Summary Generally, the boat was in reasonable condition, ropes were tight enough, fenders were doing their work. Unfortunately, on arriving at the boat the batteries were completely flat causing the starboard side bilge to be fairly full of water. Not to a level that will have caused any problems but another couple of weeks would have been an issue. Very thankful to Swansea Marina in particular John for coordinating the visit and Richard for helping capture and dispose of the bilge water as it had some oil/fuel residue but also to highlight the near miss we had too (through no fault of theirs)
Issues Batteries completely flat On arriving at the boat the batteries were completely flat, causing 30ltrs of water to accumulate in the starboard bilge. Cause The cause for this appears to have been caused by a breaker trip on the boat; for some reason, the boat’s trickle charge system had tripped, maybe a surge at some point from the shore power source. This means the domestic batteries weren’t topped up over the lockdown period. Remediation The only way to catch this issue would be visiting the boat to check the breaker & trickle charge system. We’ve had the shore power trip a few times on the marina side but never had it on the boat side, so hopefully it won’t happen again. Additionally, we knew the domestic batteries were in need of replacement - that was the main reason for the visit to the boat. I’ve replaced the 2 domestic/house batteries and ran the boat for 1hr to recharge the other batteries.
I've got another visit booked for Wednesday 27th to do more checks and run the engines again. All looking good to go.

I have a slot on Wednesday 27 May 2020 But what do I do first? after I have covered the hoist space & anchor hold, do I Sadolin the seats, creasote the deck boards, wash the side seats, sort out the non working lights? hose the boat down while I run the engine? Can I go to Bishopston for Gas Oil (or is that non essential travel) I think I will get 5 gallons of derv instead. "Izzy Whizzy lets get bust Sooty!"

Mumbles Belle Marina access visit 18 May 2020 I took the 1130 maintenance slot this morning & spent a lot of time spraying around the boat with a Jeyes Fluid solution. I pumped both bilges dry & checked the fuel levels etc, & the engine oil level, but In was unable to get the engine to turn over? I assumed that there was sufficient power in the batteries to run the pumps but not enough to turn it over. I brought the 3 batteries (2 x main & 1 x spare) home for charging, convinced that they were flat but after 10 mins or so they showed a full charge on the charger? I tested them with a drop tester & one of the main batteries (12 x 60ahc 510 cranking amps) showed only just 12 volts when fully charged. My lack of faith in the solar panel seems misplaced & that it is keeping the batteries charged. I arranged with the marina to go back on Wednesday morning with charged batteries & carry on with the maintenance, I stressed the urgency because without batteries we are vulnerable to rain. I will check the battery leads & terminals & the power system to see if I can find out where the problem lies, hopefully it won’t be anything too complex Victor Lilygreen
Marina visit 20 May 2020 Belle fired up first turn of the key once the terminals were cleaned & tightened, I covered the connections with Vaseline which should keep the corrosion at bay. When its being run regularly it doesn't appear to happen, It needs TLC before we go out next but not that bad at all. Electronics are working fine, but a couple of lights never came on, (the interior light, & the anchor light) probably a bit of corrosion, but plenty of time to sort those out before the lock gates open. The Angling Trust has created a dedicated support helpline for angling organisations. The association also recommends refraining from fishing until further notice, according to the Government restrictions announced on the 23rd of March. More information is available on the Angling Trust dedicated support page that is regularly updated with the latest news and is available on their website.
We acknowledge the positive effects of outdoors activities for the well-being of people but caution to proceed with extra care when planning activities such as fishing trips.
Possible steps to going back fishing:
• Keep at least 2 meters away from other anglers, also other people (general public). • Wash your hands regularly and keep hand sanitiser in your car, jacket and tackle box. Use regularly and disinfect tackle after use. • As far as possible, avoid travelling far to go fishing. If you need to travel, bring food, drinks, bait and equipment with you to avoid buying it at destination increasing the risk to spread the infection across the location. • Fish as far as possible alone or eventually only with members of your household. • If possible, drive alone. If you are fishing with other people, arrange individual means of transportation. • Do not fish with elderly or with people belonging to other vulnerable groups as they are at risk of falling seriously ill if infected with coronavirus.
Club boats:
Boats to be sanitise before each fishing trip and fully cleaned after each fishing trip. Small number of anglers on board to observe the 2 metre rule. Keeping 2 metres apart when queuing to board one at a time and taking up the allocated position on the boat. Bring own food, drink and cups etc. Avoid close contact banter. Sanatise hands regularly, or as required. May have to not allow vulnerable elderly members on board until the virus is fully under control.
Please comment so we are ready to fishing when we can.

So it seems we have 3 more weeks of lockdown which will take us up to mid May. Well the bream should be about by then & so should the first of the mackerel, the smooth hounds will in everybody's way, & the flats will, be back from spawning (I always reckoned that shore fishing got 100% better after the FA Cup Final anyway) So things could be a WHOLE LOT WORSE providing I escape the virus.

Allan Walters: I hope you are right Vic, but I feel it will be a few more weeks before we get access.
Victor Lilygreen: I think they will start to relax some of the restrictions they imposed without thinking (the marina for one) & some parts of the parks & beaches, but keep the obvious places where people are grouped together restricted. I dont want the gates open so that people get grouped together on boats, but access to the boats so we can carry out maintenance individually.

I hope that by next weekend the marina will be open, (even if only to restricted access) so that we can go down in limited nunbers (never a problem on Belle anyway) to do some of the outstanding work. I see parks on TV with LOADS of people in them, yet there are never many actually IN the marina, most people just walk around the outside. Lets hope the council dont treat it as a pub/cinema!

Just had a phone call from the marina with regards to your correspondence. They apologised for not getting back to you. They were low on staff to answer the phone and something about a link in your emails which they thought might contain a virus so did not respond.
The situation as they see it, we on lockdown so nobody can go down to marina an put a tarpaulin on the Belle. What they will do after heavy rain is to go down and pump water out of the Belle, using their own pumps. We have to request this service for them to take action using the emergency numbers. And, to monitor the lockdown situation through their facebook page.
It might be John or me to make the request for the Belle to be looked at.
Regards Trevor
