Martin has said that the engine is ready for collection after its repair.
When it is convenient to collect it I will go with the minibus to pick it up & take it to the marina.
We will have to arrange with the marina the day & time for lifting the engine back in where it belongs.

The Creosote has arrived! Unfortunately so has the rain, & I cant paint wet surfaces, hopefully it will brighten up later on.

I have done a bit of tinkering on Mumbles Belle this morning, after Will & Peter had cleaned the paintwork & started on the painting yesterday, I carried on this morning putting the seat & deck duckboards down to give us more room to move now lol. I replaced the old plywood deck (directly outside the wheelhouse) with new hardwood planks & gave it a coat of Creosote (probably the last in the tin) I will give it a 2nd coat when the new container arrives. I wanted to finish the duckboards and deck but the Creosote still hasn't arrived (Good old Royal Mail) but should arrive tomorrow. Martin has started on the engine oil leak, & sounds his usual non committal self (which is a good sign) he wants to know how much of the unwanted ironware he can remove, now it is not a secondary fire tender to an oil rig, I am sure we can lose 1 cwt of heavy angle iron. We are moving ahead apace now, & providing we don't have long periods of rain, I can see us back in the water 22nd/23rd, now watch out for high winds & torrential rain lol.

I really need the Creosote done first as the white gloss takes too long to dry! However I have to wait for the Creocote to be delivered (Swansea outlets are out of stock) & it seems to me that is the excuse for running down the stock, starting late, & finishing early, only doing card payment, & only doing "click & collect". I wonder how these things are having any effect on the Corona virus? Does if sleep until 9am then go back to sleep at 1600? with a break from 1200 - 1400? Does if only travel around on banknotes & not an credit cards? Can anybody even remember what NORMAL life used to be like?
Some tow rag nicked it! I managed to scrounge 10ltrs of brilliant white gloss off the decorator who I had to do some painting for me at home. I put it on the pontoon when we moved the boat so it wouldn't be in the way, & some towrag pinched if off the pontoon! Which means another £13.50 for more which galls me. Peter & Will are coming down on Wednesday to help (they don't know what is coming to them) The deck duckboards needs coating with Creosote, the seats & gunwales need painting white, the underfloor needs painting grey, the wheelhouse needs painting white, the engine cover needs painting grey, the engine needs to be lifted back in & connected, apart from that its almost finished! lo

Seeing as I could see the bottom of the bilge I moved as much ballast as I could down as low as it will go,hopefully it will stabilise the boat a bit. I managed to get 6 x 14lb sash weights, 4 x 14lb scale weights, a 14lb sledgehammer head, a load of chain. What would be perfect would be rolled up lead but I cant see anybody donating "Bluey" lol. Here is a photo of the cleaned out bilge with the ballast piled in lol Must be kept clean. Skipper Vic

I decided early on That if I didn't clean out the bilge it wouldn't get done, "granny gets buried once again & we are in mourning!" So down into the bilge I go to remove four buckets of stinking oily water, sand, mud, remains of worms & sandwiches, hooks, swivels, beads, line, grease & god knows what else the bilge is now clean. If I see anybody not picking their rubbish up in future, its SPURLASH! I have no idea when the engine will be back (if I hassle him he will take longer) anyway there is plenty more to be done, seats & duckboard floors need painting, the wheelhouse needs a coat of brilliant white inside & out, & the side seats need painting, don't be shy I will make sure you have the equipment available. Help would be appreciated. Skipper Vic Look how dirty they are.

I'm not a gambling man" These were my son's words when I showed him the boat engine, "but I would have a good punt that your problem is not a leaking sump gasket, because you dont have a sump!" Felt a bit of a numpty to be told that, but we do have some leaking bolts & the water pump gasket is leaking, no doubt he will find other oil leaks once he has power washed it. I didn't realise how shallow the sump is, the distance between the sump plate & the "fill" mark on the dipstick, is only about 30mm so the engine relies a lot on the water system to keep it cool. Plenty of help today Phil Gavey, Richie Pearce, Allan Walters, George Brincatt, Peter James, Phill Carroll all pitched in & we needed them all in the end to wrestle the hefty little sod into my Fourtrack. I put Trevor Mellard & Steve Brynant, off otherwise we would have had a bigger crowd than the Swans as it was it was a big lump to wrestle into the van but we got it eventually. My son is going to do it "between jobs" to keep the price down that will give me time to clean out the bilge, it looks like the "Black Lagoon" at present & somebody actually found a twndish in the bilge (which I don't remember losing?) Anyway thanks to all those who helped your help was much appreciated, but don't forget there is painting to be done & the engine has to go back in when its finished, so don't go on holidays yet! lol Skipper Vic

Arranged for the engine lift. Engine gets lifted out at 1330 tomorrow, I have had the crane operator to look that all is ready to go. The engine is moving freely on the engine mountings, & there is plenty of room to manoeuvre if needs be. We were unable to get at 2 of the bolts that secure the old fire fighting gear to the engine, but that will be removed when its out, as will the old pulley that used to drive the fire pump. Its been a fiddly process (lucky we had Richie to get into the tight spaces), but now all is ready. I dont know what these DIY shops are playing at, they seem to be running down their stock? Wicks was like Alcatraz & half of what I wanted was "out of stock", similarly B&M were out of stock, & Rabart could only offer me a litre of "Signal Red" because they would have to mix a litre, what is this post Covid world coming to? With a litre of Signal Red I could paint a fire engine not a skinny red boot top line?

Allan Walters & I (well mainly Allan) got stuck into Mumbles Belle this morning. He anti fouled it, while I ponced about with the annodes & putting the ballast back in, beating lumps out of the winch idler roller to try to get that to work, filling the stern tube with grease, trying to identify why the engine won't lift, & generally wasting my time while Allan did the work! lol I think we have identified what is holding the engine in, & tommorrow morning I will hopefully solve the problem. I need to get it off the boat ready to take it to my son's unit to be fixed (somehow or another) either with silicone gasket paste or a new sump gasket from the Science Museum (he is not looking forward to this job) he has told me, but as long as I get the bilge oilproof, I dont care if he uses bath sealent! lol

Well Mumbles Belle came out of the water as planned, & Richie, Allan & I started to prepare the engine for lifting out. Well it isn't quite as easy as it looks, everything is tightly squeezed into little recesses with nylock nuts on the back. We have loosened or removed every wire, cable, wire & pipe, so you would think it is simply a case of lifting it, NOT SO! Riche found out that the old fire fighting equipment is attached to the engine by a steel plate, which is impossible to remove (because of the position of the bolts (thats why they left it there when they originally converted it). So it as to be lifted on a slant, & the plate will be removed when we get the engine out, but it makes the engine about 18" longer than it looks, Sam turned up about 1100 looking to start painting (I haven't even bought the anti foul yet lol) come next week Sam & I will give you plenty to paint. I go to Cardiff tomorrow to get anti-foul its a nuisance not having a chandler in Swansea, then rethink how we are going to get this bloody engine out?

Mumbles Belle Lift Out. Thursday 30 July 2020. Skipper Vic Lilygreen Mumbles Belle came out of the water at 9am today to get the engine out and the oil leak fixed. She will get washed off and anti fouled if required. I will check the anodes & replace any that have sacrificed too much. If I get any offers of assistance I will give the seats a coat of wood preserver & hopefully give the duckboards a coat of Creosote ready for the winter. It would be nice to see a coat of white go on the wheelhouse & seats but I cant see that happening! While the engine is out I will give the bilge a lick of paint & give the engine a coat of gloss, should be like a new boat when she goes back in, but it will still be a "Chugger". Many thanks to Richie Pearce and Allan Walters (who took the photos) for giving a hand. Skipper Vic

Oystercat Fishing Trip. Friday 24 July 2020 Skipper John Elvins Short and sweet 5hr trip today. Basicly, to get some baits in the freezer. We drifted for 3 hrs for bottom fish and after 90 mins nothing to write home about. Horse mackerel were the main catch, but fresh air and jigging rods for most of the time . Gurnard, huss and dogs of course but no surprises. Nigel felt left out on last few trip so here he is with his catches. Skipper John Elvis

We had a good day weather wise, boat went well, we had a good laugh but fishing wise it was crap, better luck next time. Skipper Vic
