Giving Mumbles Belle a rest! I have other things in my life apart from that bloody boat, it doesn't respond so it can have a few days off. I have things to get tomorrow, & I am having a new timing belt & service on my truck on Saturday, so the earliest I will be back is Sunday (if its fine) I don't really understand "electrickery" so I am not serving any purpose really. I have managed to get the fuel up to the injectors, but I don't know why it wont turn over to start, maybe I will have a brainstorm by Sunday!

S**T really does happen! I went down the marina at 0830 with great plans, I fitted Derek's gift (a new filter with glass bowl) & I blew down the pipe again, & listened to the bubbles in the tank, & so I sucked the diesel back through & got 4/5 good mouthfuls YUK! I connected up the pipe to the new filter & watched in amazement as the glass bowl filled with fuel thanks to the hand primer pump, followed by the fuel coming out of the secondary filter, success at last! I cracked the injector nuts, & put a "live" to the solenoid as we have done all the week to turn the engine over, NOTHING just sparks. By now I have had more than enough, so next move is ti take the starter motor off & find out why it has decided to stop working. I am losing the will to live!

Defying the law of gravity! I checked back from the injectors to the timing pump, from there back to the secondaty filter, from there back to the lift pump, from there to the primary filter, & still no diesel. So from the primary filter I blew back through the fuel pipe into the tank & I had bubbles. I removed the observation plate on top of the tank & shone a torch in to see if there was any rubbish in there ,but it was clear & the bubbles were obvious. Which means that there has to be an air lock somewhere between the fuel tank & the primary filter. There are 2 schools of thought on how to deal with it (1) with a suction or vacuum pump (of course everybody has one of them?) (2) fill the tank up as high as possible and push the air pocket out of the line! I am going for option 2 with enough fuel above the air lock it is bound to get pushed out. & the fuel will be used anyway, Looking at the boat on the stands it could be that she is sat a little higher in the stern than normal. Anyway at least the problem has been identified, all we have to do now is find a solution?

From Lee Smith Can you rig a hand primer to suck the fuel through the pump?
From Victor Lilygreen Don't know how I would do that Lee?
From Lee Smith I’m not sure what type of injection pump is on it but usually follow the fuel line that goes in to the pump then look for the pipe that comes out. Need to suck from there with the ignition on. That should pull the fuel through the filter and the pump and get rid of the air
From Victor Lilygreen I will take some photos tomorrow so you have an idea, its a complicated fuel system because of what it was, a life boat. I would hang a 5ltr can on the door & gravity feed it to the filter

Failed again! Tried to get the diesel through all morning, but the hand lift pump is about as much use as a glass eye! The batteries are not good enough to spin the engine over long enough, or fast enough to get it to the injectors. One of the batteries has "weak" written on it from the last drop test about 5 years ago. I have charged them up but unless everything is "on the ball" she wont start. It appears that the marina have a mobile starting system on a trolley I think that has to be the way forward until we get a decision on new batteries.

Still trying to get the diesel through. We know that the starter motor works because we have turned the engine over, & that means the solenoid is working if it is powered up, the engine runs, (until it runs out of diesel that has been lifted.) Steve Bryant loosened the injectors to see if we could speed up the process, but the batteries were almost flat, but they are now on charge, so hopefully tomorrow we can pull the diesel through, & then we have the means to get back to the berth if we outstay our welcome on the yard! Trevor unfortunately was ill today, but gave us a cautionary warning "how do you turn it off if the STOP button doesn't work?" Honestly Trevor I never considered that, but it is worth considering before we put it back in the water, otherwise we could end up in the "Grape & Olive" car park?

Looking to contact Steve Bryant! Steve I am trying to get the diesel up from the pump to the secondary filter (The one with 2 screws on the top) I have loosened the furthest one & pumped the lift pump, but I don't get much more than a few bubbles to some out? You seem to have the secret of how to prime the system, share your knowledge with me, or better still come down the boat yard & show me!

Weather & medical stuff Means that I won't be crawling around Mumbles Belle until about next Tuesday. We have the back end of a tropical storm coming tonight or tomorrow, with rain forecast until about Sunday! I have to have an assessment with the doctor on Monday, so it means at least Tuesday before I can do much more. I know the "Barmy Army" are keen to get going, but they will have to wait, & they can always weigh in with a hand if they like, its the same couple all the time. Painting requires no experience & I don't have to be there to supervise, I will leave the paint & brushed/rollers handy, the colours are straightforward, the seats & gunwales are white, the wheelhouse is white (especially the port side) the engine cover is grey, if you feel like giving the orange a polish be my guest.
No fishing trips until ALL the painting is finished .

With all things considered. If Mumbles Belle is back in the water by the time the whiting arrive, it will be about the right time scale, with this weather & my onset of lack of interest . My missus thinks I have a fancy woman (lol) because of the amount of time I spend down the marina, & I don't seem to be moving forward at the pace I want. Really I need one of these new GPS's from Lowrance, it not only tells you where you are, but also what you are supposed to be doing! I need to finish off what needs doing, mainly on my knees, & once down I have a little chance to get back up. Most of the remaining work is electrical, & being short sighted & prone to dropping stuff, I will be spending most of my time fishing in the bilge for dropped nuts & bolts. Hey Ho, lets hope the sun comes out & recharges my batteries!

The engine is back in Apart from a few more electrical connections its ready to run. I took some photos before we disconnected the wiring harness, & so did Allan, so hopefully between us we should find out what goes where, at the moment we could do with "Vera" with her all seeing eye lol. The weather is getting on my nerves it looks as if its going to hammer down & nothing happens? Then it looks as if its going to be ok & its hammers down. I have had a "belly full" of going back & forward to the marina & finding myself rained off, or sitting in the window waiting for the rain that never comes! I have decided to have a couple of days off & chill out, before I attack the last few cables, & then to give it a final once over before I start it. Don't let this put any painting volunteers off , I will meet you down there & make all the material available to you, & point out what else needs doing

All ready now The decks have been creosoted, the bilges pumped dry, engine connections pulled to side for easy lift. Still plenty of white gloss to be done (as you can see on the seat fronts) & she doesn't go back in until every sq inch has been painted (unlike the last twice it has been out). An extra day or two wont make a difference anyway. Skipper Vi

Hopefully I can do some more painting tomorrow 17 August (if the forecast is correct). I have to paint the duckboards in front of the wheelhouse, & the hatch behind the engine cover, & there is still a lot of the fibre glass seating to be roller-ed when its dry. The engine is coming back on Tuesday 18 August & I hope to have the crane to lift it back in on Wednesday 19 August, connecting the engine back up & starting it will take most of the day, & with the forecast giving occasional heavy rain I will need some form of tent over the boat to get it finished. It hasn't been properly finished the last twice it has been out, because people have been too anxious to go fishing, but from what people say catches are poor at present so we aint missing much lol

Filled up again With no bilge pumps working, emptying by hand is the only option. I have rigged up an old bilge pump (that doesn't work on automatic) & I have put crocodile clips on the cables, & I attach those to a "stand alone" battery which pumps water out to save me doing it by hand, & "the job's a good un". I put down a couple of duckboards i painted yesterday, but I still have a few more to do if it ever dries. The engine is ready for collection & now I have to arrange for Martin to be present to let us in, I have to arrange the minibus to be available at that time, I need to have hands to lift it off the bus at the marina, & we need the crane to lift it back into the boat. I am supposed to be "taking it easy" when will I get the chance? lol

All smoke & mirrors!" Seeing as the rain had stopped I decided to do a bit more on Mumbles Belle, I managed to put Creosote on the movable duck boards, so flushed with success I decided to coat the non- movable sections that are screwed to the fiberglass deck. I wondered why the boards were still showing wet after I had "squeezed" them? ? I lifted the engine cover to see where the water was coming from, & found both bilges filled to overflowing with rain water! (as I had been brushing it down one hole it was coming up from another) lol Many dozens of buckets full later the bilges were empty, the batteries are disconnected so the bilge pumps can't work, anyhow the electrics work through a "split charge diode" system, & the electricity goes through the alternator (I think) which works the bilge pumps. Seeing as the alternator is attached to the engine & is in Pontardawe there wasn't much chance of the bilge pumps working lol. (I told you it was all smoke & mirrors) I did manage to do some Creosoting & we are ready for the engine to go back in now it has been fixed. I am hoping that next weekend will see us back on the water. Skipper Vic
