We took Mumbles Belle, with 5 on board, out beyond the SWIGG & anchored up confident that we were going to be "In the money", but unfortunately the only cod we had throughout the day were between 4ozs & 8 ozs. However we did have a good number of "jumbo" whiting, & some lovely big fat dabs, & luckily only a few dogfish. Richie Pearce once again showed us all up pulling in jumbo after jumbo, & double shots of dabs, I did quite well too ending up with 9 jumbo's & 5 dabs & I think everybody had fish to take home. We eventually managed to get Richie to pack in when it was pitch dark "to avoid the crowd in the lock" he said (& he was proved right with only 5 of us locking in)!
The "Belle" was a pleasure to be out on, providing plenty of space for those who wanted to fish 2 rods, & despite being beam on to the quite choppy SSW swells not a drop of water came over the gunwhales. The only "downer" of the day was the struggle to get the anchor up, despite going ahead & 2 of us heaving on the anchor rope it must have taken us a good 10mins of struggle before we got the anchor back aboard! I think the first reaction must be to set up the "Alderney Method" of lifting the anchor without any effort, it makes sense to use my lift bouy & ring, & lazy line & "banjo" to establish that it works first, (I haven't pulled an anchor up in 10yrs lol).
I have asked for the "Mumbles Belle" to fish the Afan Boat Club Cod Comp on Sunday 16th February, lets hope we get some cod that day. if not I will be quite happy to catch more jumbo whiting & dabs, the secret of our success? green "muppets" baited with mackerel or smelly lug mmmmmmmm
